On March 10, 1932, the Alma-Ata region of the Kazakh ASSR (part of the RSFSR) was formed, from December 5, 1936 - as part of the Kazakh SSR with the center in Alma-Ata. The region included 18 districts.
At the end of 1939, part of the districts was transferred to the Dzhambul and Semipalatinsk regions, 23 districts remained in the Alma-Ata, including 7 newly formed ones.
In March 1944, the Taldy-Kurgan region was separated from its structure, where 11 districts were transferred.
At the end of 1959, the city of Alma-Ata was separated from the region. In the same year, the Alma-Ata and Taldy-Kurgan regions were merged, then in 1968 the Taldy-Kurgan region was re-allocated.
The last unification of the two regions - Almaty and Taldykorgan, took place in 1997.
The region includes 17 districts and 3 cities of regional subordination (Taldykorgan, Kapshagai, Tekeli).
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 585 of April 14, 2001 "On the relocation of the regional center of the Almaty region", the city of Taldykorgan became the regional center.
On September 2, 2019, an area of 10.92 km² was excluded from the region and transferred to the Zhambyl region [5].
