The largest sector by employment (over 27% of total employment). 136 large and medium industrial enterprises.
The only producer in the republic of malt, electric batteries, drywall products, reinforced concrete and metal poles for high-voltage power lines, fire hydrants, silicone and synthetic winterizer.
About 70 types of basic building materials and structures are produced.
The huge potential in the production of building materials (significant deposits of facing stone, gabbro, marble, limestone, mineral salts and other minerals provides the industry with the necessary raw materials).

On March 10, 1932, the Alma-Ata region of the Kazakh ASSR (part of the RSFSR) was formed, from December 5, 1936 - as part of the Kazakh SSR with the center in Alma-Ata. The region included 18 districts.
At the end of 1939, part of the districts was transferred to the Dzhambul and Semipalatinsk regions, 23 districts remained in the Alma-Ata, including 7 newly formed ones.
In March 1944, the Taldy-Kurgan region was separated from its structure, where 11 districts were transferred.
At the end of 1959, the city of Alma-Ata was separated from the region. In the same year, the Alma-Ata and Taldy-Kurgan regions were merged, then in 1968 the Taldy-Kurgan region was re-allocated.
The last unification of the two regions - Almaty and Taldykorgan, took place in 1997.
The region includes 17 districts and 3 cities of regional subordination (Taldykorgan, Kapshagai, Tekeli).
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 585 of April 14, 2001 "On the relocation of the regional center of the Almaty region", the city of Taldykorgan became the regional center.
On September 2, 2019, an area of 10.92 km² was excluded from the region and transferred to the Zhambyl region [5].
The industrial potential of the Almaty region is represented by more than 1000 enterprises
The region occupies a dominant position in the republic for the production of wine, sugar, fruit and vegetable juices, tobacco products, malt, leather from cattle skins, containers from corrugated cardboard, electric batteries.
A number of large industrial enterprises operate in the food processing industry - manufacturers of products of well-known world brands "Coca Cola", "Efes Karaganda", "Hamle", "Adal", "FoodMaster", "Danone", "RG Brands Kazakstan", "Gold Product ".
One of the largest enterprises in the industry, TF Azhar LLP, is the production of clothing for law enforcement agencies, workwear, suits for men, women, children, soft inventory.
